Accompanimental Recordings For UMass Amherst Music Students
In the spring of 2020, the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. I was a piano accompanist at the UMass Amherst music department. In the middle of a busy semester, everything was suddenly shut down. All classes and recitals stopped. All the students were sent home, and I was sent home as well.
In order to allow students to finish the semester, we arranged to continue performing music remotely. We collaborated over Zoom and email. My job was to record the accompanimental piano parts for the pieces we were working on.
So that's what I did. Every day, I recorded these pieces and provided them to the students via this website. These are the recordings I made during those two strange, scary months.
I'm grateful to the music faculty at UMass Amherst--particularly Salvatore Macchia, who was the chair of the department--for ensuring that accompanists stayed on the payroll. They supported our livelihoods and allowed us to continue working. In a crisis, we made music.
