Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening

Download sheet music

Robert Frost's Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening was first introduced to me in middle school, in a book that contained classic poetry and short stories. Since then it's come to mind more frequently than probably any other poem. This may have something to do with where I grew up. I was born and raised in rural Maine, which has very cold winters. There's something about the description of being perfectly alone in the wintertime that strikes a nerve in me. It is a feeling I've had before and cherished, and this poem captures it beautifully. So when I was at UNH, I set Stopping By Woods for baritone (or bass) and piano.

For millennia, being completely alone has been an important part of the human experience. But in the modern world, fully getting away from other people is less common than it used to be. Even on nature trails, you generally expect someone will come across you sooner or later. I could be wrong, but I think this has changed significantly even within my lifetime.
