They make me pay attention to each part in a way I should but don't have to for bigger groups. Good part writing is important for smaller ensembles because the parts are more transparent, and it's hard to get smaller than just two people. It's a challenge that sharpens my abilities. When I was in grad school, I wanted to write some duets for violin and viola, so I composed these two pieces under the tutelage of Salvatore Macchia. One of them was performed that semester, and the other has never been performed to my knowledge.
