Two Sonatinas for Solo Piano Hassam

Sonatina No. 2 (listen)
Sonatina No. 1 (listen)

These two piano sonatinas were begun some time apart, but they were finished close together.

The first was something I wrote in college. I think it was 2009 when I premiered it. I didn't like it much. The original second movement didn't work musically, and the original last movement was very slow and melancholy. I revised it about a decade later for a concert with Javier Marquez.

The second piano sonatina was finished in 2015, and that was premiered at the Applewood Retirement Community in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Looking back on it, the first sonatina was one of my earliest forays into writing sonata-allegro form. That opening melody was eventually reused in another, larger piano sonata. Actually, that first sonatina was like a little sonata in its own right. It almost wants to be longer. It's more serious than the second, which is a genuine sonatina, written more in the style of Clementi or Kuhlau.

Sheet music for these pieces is available to subscribers.
