The Ben Tibbetts Podcast Painting, Klimt (1895)

In the Ben Tibbetts Podcast, I read things that I think are interesting and accompany them with original music. Each episode is loosely related to music, art, and philosophy.

Episode 4: "The Mind Divided" (listen)
This episode covers an excerpt from "Waking Up" by Sam Harris which describes the weird phenomenon of split brain syndrome. It was produced with the help of my friend Michael Foster. I composed the music. There is some audio in the episode from "Who's On First?" by Abbott and Costello. The origins of some of the sound effects in this episode are unknown. Unfortunately, I neglected to keep good records about where those audio files came from. If you own any of the sound effects in this episode and object to them being used, feel free to reach out to me and I'll be happy to alter the audio.

Episode 3: "The War of Art" (listen)
I read excerpts from "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield. "The War of Art" is a very interesting and helpful book about the struggle to do what you really want to do. Pressfield's concept of the "resistance" and its antidote, "professionalism" has changed the way I work. I rarely go a day without thinking about those ideas. I worked very hard on this episode and I'm proud of it. I composed all of the music. The sound of the ocean that appears in this episode is courtesy of freesound.org, and the recording of Gerald Ford's inauguration ceremony is courtesy of C-SPAN.

Episode 2: "A Thousand True Fans" (listen)
This episode is a full reading of "A Thousand True Fans", an article by Kevin Kelly. "A Thousand True Fans" influenced the way that I think about my relationship with an audience. Kelly advocates for finding a small number of passionate, loyal fans instead of a large number who are more indifferent. He makes a compelling case that this is a better model for artists.

Episode 1: "Everything You Should Know About Sound" (listen)
I read through "Everything You Should Know About Sound", a blog post by Tim Urban. The blog in which this appears, Wait But Why, is fantastic. It has some excellent long-form content on topics ranging from artificial intelligence to energy. There are silly articles too, like funny pictures of animals. I can't recommend it highly enough. This article is just one of many I could have read for this show, but it seemed appropriate since it was about sound and I originally wanted this podcast to be at least somewhat related to music. This episode features excerpts from a live performance of Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 8 by violinist Celaya Kirchner, which was used with permission.
